I prepared the boards by painting the background images and making them waterproof.
The rocket involved the children filling the shape with all manner of junk which had been collected since September. The planet was then filled with hundreds of blue and green bottle tops.
Jodrell Bank was made using a combination of nearly 300 lollypop sticks and slats from an old venetian blind. The dome was filled with junk items and spray painted white.
The moon buggy was devised using large pieces of junk to represent the parts of the buggy. All children got to use a range of tools and equipment, such as hammer and nails, hand saws, drills, battery operated and powerful mains operated, glue guns and cartridge guns. The finished boards where then finsihed with clear varnish to help project them against the elements.
The event was to celebrate everything that is good about Crewe, including its rich railway history.
I decided to create the outline of a train and carriages which people could come along to and fix items of junk within the outline.
The day was a great success with both boards completed on the day. They were taken back to my studio where I enhanced the black outline and spray-painted the junk panels. The slide show opposite shows images of preparation, through to finished piece.
